Whatever someone’s reasons for moving to a new state after divorce, it appears that Texas is one of the most popular destinations. A review of data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that more women moved to the Lone Star State in the 12 months after getting divorced than any other state in the country.
The most popular post-divorce home state for women
In total, 4,828 women moved to Texas within a year of their divorce. That may not sound like a huge number, but it makes Texas number one by far over Florida and Georgia. On the other hand, 2,333 Texas women who got divorced left the state within a year — the fourth-highest figure of any state.
Men acted differently
For men, Texas ranked as the fifth-most popular state to move to after divorce, with 1,717 ex-husbands moving here. But more divorced men moved away, at about 2,900.
Why Texas?
There are many good reasons to live in Texas that seem to attract many people after divorce. Besides job opportunities or romantic prospects, it is likely that many of those who moved here soon after getting divorced are native Texans returning to be closer to friends and family. Those who moved away probably had similar motivations.
