Should You Change Your Name After Divorce?

Divorce is never a simple experience. There are so many aspects of one’s life that change during a divorce. With a new living situation, changes in finances, custody of children, dividing property, there is a lot to think about.

In addition to all of these big decisions, people will also need to think about changing your last name. For some people, they don’t mind their current last name, but for others, it can help them move forward by changing it. Whichever decision you might be leaning towards, keep this information in mind to help you make your decision.

The Reason for the Name Change

It is important to know exactly why you want to change your last name. Is it because you dislike your ex and want to forget about them ever existing? Do you just like your old last name? Do you want a separate identity from your old life? Is there a new last name you want? If you answer yes to any of these questions, then changing your name could help.

However, if there are children in the mix, it could introduce some challenges because you will then have a different name from them. For children, it might be stressful for them to have to tell others about why they have a different last name as their parent. Would this bother you or them? If not, then there is no worry. You may just have to correct some people when they call you by your child's name.

Business Connections

Businesses can be negatively impacted by a name change, especially when the name represents the business. Sometimes it is counterproductive and simply bad for business to make such a drastic change. If you’ve built a brand around your name, a name change can mean that you will have to create a new identity for your business.

People inherently do not like change, and customers may take their money elsewhere if they see a new name because the brand recognition you’ve built has been lost. This would be an unfortunate sacrifice that would be required for the continued success of the business.
